Yuksom is a lovely town situated in the district of West Sikkim of the northern Indian state of Sikkim, which has been set in the lap of the beautiful Himalayas. The scenic beauty and historical significance of the place has brought the pride of calling it as the ‘Gateway to Kangchenjunga’, here begins the best treks to the third highest peak in the world. It was established in the year 1642, and it is regarded as one of the oldest towns in Sikkim and in addition to that; it also held the status of the capital town of this state as well.
Geographical Location
Yuksom located at a height of approximately 1, 780 meters above the sea level. It is found in the foothills of remarkably attractive hills and is endowed with many vegetation types and wild animals; as a result, it considered as the most suitable place for trekking and wildlife enthusiasts. The town is approximately 150 km from Gangtok, the capital of the Indian State of Sikkim and the place can only be accessed by road passing through beautiful, though, at times scary mountain terrain.
1. Kathok Wodsallin Gompa: This monastery is one of the oldest in Yuksom and furnished with wall paintings, and engrossed with a number of Benedictine bibles. Thus, it is a secluded place where one can go and think or even pray for that matter.
2. Dubdi Monastery: As befits its setting on the cliff it is often called the ‘Eremos’ which means the Hermit’s Cell. It was established in the year 1701, and that makes it as one of the oldest known monasteries in Sikkim. It also affords opportunity to view mountainous terrains and valleys among others.
3. Norbugang Park: This historical park has Coronation Throne of Norbugang which was used at the time of first Chogyal’s coronation of Sikkim. This is culturally appreciated which is situated to be amidst the forest.
4. Tashiding Monastery: There is another monastery nearby Yuksom and the main focus of touristic attraction of the area is the Bumchu festival. The monastery as an architectural construction also looks very bright due to colorful paints on wooden frameworks and painted thangkas; an inside of the monastery has a golden stupa.
5. Kangchenjunga National Park: This national park has a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be accessed from Yuksom and is known for the high altitude treks which include the Goecha La trek. There is also different varieties of vegetation and animal species like snow leopard not forgetting in the park.
6. 3 Sister waterfalls and Bahubali waters fall
There are 3 sister waterfalls which are located just near the Yuksom by walk. This waterfall is located 30 minutes away from the Yuksom town, however, why this waterfalls has been given 3 sister waterfalls? The reason is the Creation of this falls is has been done in 3 steps with unique forms. The first one is equal to 100 meters height, the second one is 250 meters height and the third step forming in the 400 meters height, In this way the three sisters waterfalls are unique.

Therefore, it has a very rich history, and the people of Sikkim have a great significance to Yuksom because of its history to the formation of Namgyal dynasty. It is very much an indigenous Buddhist influenced town especially the Bhutia, Lepchas, Nepalis etc; Its beliefs, practices, food and festivals owe allegiance to this influence.
