Goechala Trek Overview
The Goechala Trek is situated in the western region of Sikkim, near Mount Kanchenjunga, and is one of the most challenging high-altitude treks in the Himalayas. The Goechala Trek starts from Yuksom, a historic village in West Sikkim, passes through the wilderness of Khangchendzonga National Park, and leads trekkers towards some of the closest trekking viewpoints of Mount Kanchenjunga.
The route is challenging and passes through remote Himalayan landscapes, traversing forest trails, alpine meadows, and rich cultural landscapes. The gradual ascent allows trekkers to acclimatise properly while experiencing the diverse environments and remoteness of the eastern Himalayas.
Goechala is a favourite among trekkers because it offers chances to reach one of the closest trekking viewpoints of Kanchenjunga, the world's third-tallest peak. Goechala Viewpoint is one of the best locations on the trek to witness sunrise over Kanchenjunga, offering views of Mount Kanchenjunga and other peaks in the early morning.
What Makes Goechala Trek Special?
The biggest attraction of the Goechala Trek is the close view of Mount Kanchenjunga from Goechala Viewpoint. Watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the Kanchenjunga massif and surrounding Himalayan peaks is one of the most memorable moments of this journey.
Unlike many popular Himalayan treks, the Goechala Trek takes trekkers deep into the protected landscapes of Khangchendzonga National Park. The trail passes through diverse ecosystems, from dense forests and alpine landscapes to high-altitude terrain, offering opportunities to experience Himalayan flora and fauna, as well as the natural beauty of eastern Sikkim.
The trek also provides an opportunity to experience Sikkim's culture and heritage, beginning from Yuksom, the historic village that served as Sikkim's first capital. The combination of dramatic mountain scenery, rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and the challenge of reaching high-altitude viewpoints makes Goechala one of the most distinctive trekking experiences in Sikkim.
