About Phoktey Dara Trek
Phoktey Dara at 3,734 meters is one of the famous trek in West District. The hike itself stretches about 26 kilometers and gives you the rare chance to see four of the tallest mountains on Earth: Mt. Makalu, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse.
On the east the trekkers can see Mt. Sinolchu, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Khanchendzonga, Mt. Podium, Mt. Rathong and Mt. Kokthang. The hike offers a 360-degree panorama of many peaks, including the famous ‘Sleeping Buddha’ form of Kanchenjunga mountain.
From the top of the Phoktey Dara, trekkers are rewarded with awesome views of Phalut, Sandhakpu, the blooming alpine trees, the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary and the Nunthaley peak. The trail is renowned for the variety of birds and splendid Rhododendron forests. It is also the entry point to the Singalila Ridge Trek.
Phoktey Dara is specially known for its sunrise and sunset points which have an exceptional view, making it a must-do trek for any nature lovers or photographers.
Treks that can be taken from Inside Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary – Phoktey Dara Trek
It is positioned within the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. As you walk through this undisturbed area you will enter several types of virgin forests (Mixed Coniferous Forest, Montane Wet Temperate Forest and Subalpine Conifer and Birch-fir Forest) With a humid and rich climate, the vegetation of this forest is always green, even in the wintertime.
The sanctuary is around 104 KM square large and there are numerous wildlife including the Barking Deer, Marbled Cat, Himalayan Black Bear and the extremely rare Red Panda. It is also a perfect spot for the photography enthusiast who wants to capture the nature's beauty.
Origin and availability
Starting out from Uttarey, this route goes through a serene hamlet in Northern Singalila range in West Sikkim. Everest-Kanchenjunga View Trek is also commonly known as this region with its closness to the towering giants.
Visitors can take a train or flight to reach Uttarey. The closest railway station is NJP (New Jalpaiguri) and airport is IXB (Bagdogra Airport).
